DEMOCRACY DAY: TORAN URGES NIGERIANS TO SHUN DIFFERENCES, PROTECT DEMOCRACY


In commemoration of the nation's democracy day, the Tricycle Owners And Riders Association Of Nigeria (TORAN), Ogun State Chapter has sought for the need for the people to shelve their socio-cultural, political and religious differences to protect the nation's democracy. 

The Union in a statement quoting its Chairman, Prince Abdulwaasi Agunbiade, as signed by the PRO, Asiwaju Samson Aluko explained that it was hightime every citizens contributed their respective quota to the sustainability of the democracy, by participating actively in governance process at all levels.

Agunbiade stressed the need for every Nigerians to participate fully in the country’s democratic process at both the local, state and federal levels, with an appeal to all stakeholders in the helms of affairs in all level of government to build sustainable institutions of governance towards strengthening democratic ideals for the benefits of upcoming generations. 

Pointing out the essence of openness, fairness and transparency as the cardinal principles of democracy, Agunbiade added that June 12 carried huge significance for older Nigerians, as it featured the most free and fair election that many observers had described as the most significant in Nigeria’s post-independence political history. 

Commending the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for changing the narrative in governance, Agunbiade posited that to sustain democracy in Nigeria, the masses must be afforded sufficient food, housing, health care, education, sufficiently clean and healthful environment with a view to meeting their physical and mental needs. 

"To ensure equality of opportunity, both within and across generations, both nature and society must be protected from economic exploitation and degradation", the statement concluded.
