OGHA ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMITTEE BEGINS CONSIDERATION OF 2023 AUDIT REPORTS, TAKES ON INFORMATION MINISTRY



Ogun State House of Assembly through its Committee on Public Accounts and Anti- Corruption today began the consideration of the 2023 audit reports on Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the State government with a call on the heads of MDAs to make themselves available for the exercise which is meant to scrutinise how effectively public money had been expended and whether value for money has been achieved.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Damilare Bello, made the call while leading other Committee members to consider the audit reports of the State Ministry of Information and Strategy as well as the State Technical and Vocation Education Board ( OGSTVEB)  at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Hon. Bello stated that the essence of the consideration was to ensure accountability, probity and transparency within government spending, blocking leakages as well as ensuring that due process was followed in the implementation of Government polices and projects in line with the Constitution and other extant laws of the State.


"The Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption Committee is a statutory Committee empowered by virtue of Section 125 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended to oversee the Financial statements of all Government departments and state institutions, any audit reports issued on those statements, report compiled by the Auditor-General on Government departments and state institutions, as well as any other financial statements or reports referred to by the Committee.

The committee is also charged with responsibility of scrutinizing how effectively public money has been expended and whether value for money has been achieved by ensuring accountability, probity and transparency within government spending, blocking of leakages as well as ensuring that due process is followed in the implementation of Government polices and projects in line with the Constitution and extant laws.

Therefore, this Committee is not setup to witch-hunt, to destroy anybody or to fight the Government but to help Government block unnecessary leakages and ensure there is value for Government funds. Hence, we are using this medium to appeal for the cooperation of all invited parties during this exercise and failure to cooperate with this Committee may result to further escalation", he submitted.

He therefore enjoined the Management team of the Ministry of Information and Strategy led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication, Hon. Kayode Akinmade to intensify efforts in ensuring that the ministry secure more financial approvals to meet its capital expenditure for the ongoing year, so as to assist in the effective discharge its responsibilities in promoting government laudable policies and programmes.

The House Committee also requested that the Director of Finance in the Ministry, Mr. Olawale Abijo, re-present the detailed financial records of the ministry to include bank reconciliation, list of other equipment and capital expenditure in tune with the audited account, and should be submitted to the Committee within 48 hours.

Responding, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication, Hon. Akinmade appreciated the value being brought to governance through the activities of the Committee, assuring that efforts were being made to secure more funding for the Ministry's capital projects for the current financial year.

He assured that all relevant information and documents required by the Committee would be duly supplied by the Ministry.

The Committee also considered the audit report on the State Technical and Vocational Education Board, with a request from the Board to provide supporting documents on maintenance of public schools, list of other equipment as well as making necessary corrections in its financial record and submit same to the Committee by Friday 28th February, 2024 at 10.00am.
