ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION: OGHA DIRECTS MINISTRY TO ENFORCE IMMEDIATE EVACUATION OF STRUCTURE ALONG DRAINAGE PATH AT OGERE

The Ogun State House of Assembly through its Committee on Environment has called on the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to enforce compliance on a filling station, SGR (formerly Mallo Petroleum), which was built on the waterway, blocking a major drainage system at Ogere Tollgate, thereby causing environmental degradation including the blockage of free flow of waste from surrounding companies.

The House Committee chaired by Hon. Samisudeen Lawal, made the call during an on-the-spot assessment visit to a company-New Base World Class Resources Ltd, producers of Mr Fruits beverages, following a petition alleging improper disposal of wastewater.

The Committee Chairman noted that the blocked drainage posed a major environmental and health risk to the community; requesting an immediate action on the matter.

Hon. Lawal in company of his co-lawmakers including Honourables Dickson Awolaja,  Babatunde Tella,  Adebisi Oyedele and Damilola Soneye, while conducting physical assessment on the facilities, confirmed that the major obstruction to the free flow of wastewater was caused by the filling station constructed on the drainage path.

The House Committee emphasised that the Ministry should take immediate action to restore free flow of water within the area in the interest of public health and safety.

The lawmakers further urged all companies along the axis to provide proper drainage systems to manage their wastewater, warning that poor handling of industrial waste could trigger outbreak of disease; assuring that the Assembly would ensure that the concerned ministries and companies address the matter accordingly.

Earlier while conducting the lawmakers round the facility, the Human Relations Officer, Miss Aminat Akanni, explained that the wastewater was always treated before releasing into an external drainage; adding that OGWAMA was always on ground to evacuate solid waste up to seven times in a month.
