OGHA DEPUTY SPEAKER CHAIRS NATIONAL QUIZ ON LEGISLATURE AND DEMOCRACY

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Oludaisi Elemide, has described the National Quiz and Competition on Legislature and Democracy as a vital step towards raising a generation of Nigerians who truly understand democratic values and the responsibilities they entail.

Rt. Hon. Elemide, represented by his deputy made the remarks today, while declaring open, the competition organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), and hosted at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. 

The Speaker noted that holding the event in the Hallowed Chamber of the Assembly was symbolic, offering participants firsthand exposure to democracy in action.

He commended NILDS for its commitment to civic education and encouraged the students to embrace the contest with courage, curiosity, and sportsmanship; encouraging them to see the competition beyond winning, but its values of justice, fairness, and service should guide them as future leaders.

The Director General, National Institute for Democratic Studies ( NILDS) Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, represented by Farouq Onikitipa and the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaja Moriamo Oloko, explained that the essence was to deepen legislative governance, and serving as an avenue to produce Nigerians who are conscious of democratic practice.

They urged the students to think critically, as education is now based on critical thinking to develop skills required for national development.

In his closing remarks, the Clerk/ Head of Legislative Service, Alhaji Sakiru Adebakin, commended the brilliance displayed by all participants, noting that they were among the lucky ones; commending them for demonstrating the resilience and excellence the State is known for.

The competition featured six schools from across Ogun State: Abeokuta Grammar School, The Chosen College Adigbe, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Iganmode Grammar School, The Ambassador College Ota, and International College Ibefun. 

The Ambassador College, Ota, after several rounds, emerged winner of the State contest, securing a spot at the regional competition that would be conducted later in Akure. Abeokuta Grammar School and Ijebu-Ode Grammar School finished second and third respectively.

In attendance at the programme were the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Yusuf Amosun, Hon. ( Dr.)  Babatunde Tella, , the Clerk/ Head of Legislative Service, Mr. Sikiru Adebakin and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko.
